How Do You Plan Safer Halloween Décor?

Halloween decorations for a home entry and seasonal display

Plan Halloween décor around clear walking routes, stable placement, and lighting that does not add avoidable fire or trip hazards. Decorate the scene after you decide where guests and trick-or-treaters need to walk.

Source basis checked October 6, 2026. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends flameless lighting where children can gain access, keeping flames away from combustible décor, removing obstacles from lawns and steps, and checking decorative light strands for damage. CPSC Halloween safety guidance.

Start with the route

Walk from the sidewalk or driveway to the door in daylight and after dark. Keep steps, landings, and narrow turns free of loose props and cords.

Build the display in layers

Use one focal area, then add smaller pieces without blocking movement. A table runner or door sign can create seasonal character without occupying the walking path. Browse the Halloween collection, including this seasonal beaded table runner and interchangeable seasonal welcome sign.
